Faculty of Biological Sciences
Department of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering was established a few years back in 2006. The potential of biotechnology has just begun to emerge in the late 20th century. After the full knowledge of human genomes, biotechnology has stepped up into a new era of drug discovery and delivery, diagnostic methodology, clinical trials, and to a great extent the major lifestyle of the human society. Biotechnology has opened doors to make proteins with new functions and altered products. With new proteins and new biochemical pathways, it seems only logical to find ways to incorporate the new functions into crops, into animals, and, it is hoped, into people with genetically based illnesses. Pakistan, being a developing country, has several constraints especially to develop biotechnology in the country. Although, several universities have programs in Bio-chemical Engineering, Molecular biology and Biotechnology with world-class facilities, an acute shortage of trained manpower continues to exist. This is because of the shortage of centers where scientists could be trained in the experimental arts of biological research. Several universities offer training programs, but may not have facilities to give experimental exposures to the students, and therefore, there exists a great gap between the required essential facilities for training and the vision of progress of biotechnology in the country.
To fulfill this gap and meet the global challenges, Department of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering has started its BS program in Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering and currently has more than 200 students in its BS program. In addition to the BS program, the department has recently started M. Phil and PhD programs and currently has 40 M. Phil and 5 PhD scholars. They are carrying their research activities in different fields of biotechnology including Plant, Industrial, Environmental, Pharmaceutical, Human and Medical. For all these programs we have a highly qualified staff consisting of more than 15 members of which 10 have PhD's and are actively involved in research in different domains of Biotechnology.View items
The Botany department was initiated in 2005 but recently it has been renamed with a new name, i.e., Botanical and Environmental Science after the initiation of Environmental Sciences program in 2017. The department was started in a very small building of only three rooms but during its first decade, the department has developed a large & productive research & teaching group in the field of Botany and Environmental Sciences.
Currently, the department has well-furnished classrooms and laboratories to fulfill the academic requirements of the undergraduate and graduate students. The department offers BS, MSc, MPhil and PhD degree in Botany whereas in Environmental Sciences currently BS degree is offered. Admissions in MPhil and PhD programmes in Environmental Sciences will be offered in the near future.
Our faculty members are working in many specialized fields of Plant Science such as Plant Ecology, Plant Physiology, Plant Ecophysiology, Plant Taxonomy, Ethnomedicinal studies, Palynology, Molecular Biology, Plant Genetics, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Biology, GIS and Remote sensing and Solid Waste Management.
During a short period of time, the department has completed many research projects with the support of national & international funding organizations & several research projects are in progress.
The department is planning to establish a Botanical garden, Herbarium and Environmental laboratory that will help to provide variety of services to local community and will build a base to our department at national & international level for research.View items
Since the establishment of KUST in 2001, it has been the utmost need of the area to have quality institution in the field of Sciences particularly in Zoology. Department of Zoology in KUST was established in 2004 with the aim to promote education and research in the Animal World. Since its inception, the Department of Zoology is disseminating the knowledge to undergraduates and graduates with excellent academic preparation and research experience. This Department strives to create an environment that enables teaching and research to attain high levels of excellence in which its members can achieve their full potential.View items
Microbiology department was established in September 2003 and since then has made significant advancements in almost every sphere of academics as well as research. At present the department consists of total fourteen faculty members and five non teaching staff. As being the first biological sciences department, established in the KUST, we owe to our distinction, the dedication to excellence in research and teaching, outstanding therefore in attracting a large numbers of students at the undergraduate as well as at the graduate and doctoral levels. We take pride in launching our trainees into successful and productive main stream careers, as abundant qualified graduates are serving in various capacities at different private and public sector organizations of the country.
The department focuses on the applied aspect of microbiology relevant to the needs in local and regional environment. In perspective of the flourishing and ever growing scope of microbiology, the department today is equipped with modern state of the art tools and laboratories. Moreover the students and faculty are provided opportunity to participate in national and international workshops and conferences for their career enhancement. With the concerted efforts of all the stakeholders, we aspire to achieve very soon the position of center of excellence and information resource in accordance to the market needs in almost all the fields of microbiology such as medical microbiology, industrial microbiology, agriculture microbiology, environmental microbiology, microbial genetics and recombinant DNA technology.View items
